My main subject interest is portraiture tied in with fashion. My passion to photograph people is due to a personal interest in people’s character; who they are and the way in which we glimpse this through a photograph. Photographers that greatly inspire me include fashion photographer Tim Walker and Ryan McGinley who both create surreal, absurd and fantasy lifestyles within their images. I find something quite mysterious and spontaneous about their work. I enjoy the atmospheres that they create through colour and natural light, using film that gives a rawness to their pictures. For me their images speak of possibility in the way we are able to live, they portray lifestyles that are about friendship, adventure, style and enjoyment of the world we live in.
In my most recent project I have been experimenting with levitation, using camera trickery to make subjects look as though they are floating. After taking inspiration from the photographers already mentioned and Rosie Hardy, I wanted to play around with creating fantasy that’s only possible using digital techniques to produce levitation images. I enjoy how these images play with the viewer as you try to understand them and how the image creates a different world that is unnatural, yet appears realistic. I have also been experimenting with different colour layers that are saturated into the image with various blending methods to manipulate the colour and feel of my images in order to develop atmosphere.
Studying on the photography course will enable me to explore my ideas further as well as developing skills to express myself more clearly. Photography enables me to look at the life around me, including the important people who are part of it. Looking into the world around me helps me understand who i am through the reflection it creates.
